Trades
Roof Tiler
Bob Evans
My name is Bob and I was in the building trade for around 30
years. I spent the majority of my career as a Roof Tiler.
Over this time
I gained many handyman skills from other trades. I chose Hire
A Hubby because after being retrenched I shopped around
for different
franchises and after several meetings with Hire A Hubby I felt
it would be a great option for me. Since starting my own Hire
A Hubby business in 1997, I have gained a lot of independence
and
thoroughly enjoy working for myself. In this time I have found
the networking and friendship between franchisees has been a
useful tool and extremely rewarding. If you’re looking
for flexibility and independence in your working environment
I strongly recommend
Hire A Hubby.

Previously before joining Hire A Hubby l worked as a Powder

was to get
an idea how to run a small business and work less hours.

l like
to build,
repair and fix things. What l like about the business is
you work the hours you want, be your own Boss. lf l wanted

off and work around it. l enjoy the variety of jobs you
receive
each day.
Maintenance Fitter
Steve Potts
Hi, my name is Steve Potts. I have been a Hire A Hubby Franchisee
for almost 4 years beginning in December 2002.
I have come from a trade background, being a qualified
Maintenance Fitter. After completing my apprenticeship
in 1991, I took
the opportunity to move location and worked in a few
machine shops
before taking up a position as Production Manager with
a major tap-ware company. I spent approximately ten
years in
this role
before deciding that I was tired working hard for other
people. I began looking around for something, that
wasn’t going
to cost me the earth to get into, but also a business that was
going
to give me a lifestyle choice as well as the opportunity to earn
a comfortable living.
I am pleased to say that Hire A Hubby has provided
this opportunity for me, and with the combination
of this
opportunity and
my family’s
hard work, we have a good solid business that continues to grow.
Being a Maintenance Fitter, I was lucky to be able
to draw on those skills, as well as learn on the
job in
areas that
I hadn’t
had much experience in. I have also done renovations on my own
home, which has helped.
Electrical Tradesman
David
Hi, my name is David and I have been a Hire A Hubby
franchisee for 2 and a half years. Prior to
this, I worked as an
electrical tradesman in heavy and normal industrial,
service commercial
and domestic areas. My reason for joining Hire
A Hubby was that the
job I was doing was ruining my back. I thought
the variety of Hire A Hubby would solve that
problem and it has.
I found the transition to Hire A Hubby easy.
I had managed to keep around 6 to 8 hours
of work
a week
with my old
company which I
did for the first 13 months. It took about
1 month before business started to pick up and
after about
8 months
I had the pleasant
problem of trying to fit all the work in.
I learnt my handyman skills from my father
and other tradesmen that I worked with
plus trial
and error
at home.
What I like about this business is the
flexibility to work in with my family,
the enjoyment
of different types
of
work and watching
a business grow.
Floor & Wall
Tiler
Danny
I have owned my franchise for four years
now and I still look forward to going
to work everyday.
My father
was
a builder and from when
I was about twelve years old I used
to go to work
with him on weekends and school holidays.
Then when I left
school I
worked full time
with him for about two years. He
taught me so much himself, working around
other tradesmen,
bricklayers,
tilers,
gyprockers, painters
etc, I learnt so much more. After
two years of
working with
my father I decided I wanted to become
a floor and wall tiler. So
I started an apprenticeship.
I stopped doing tiling in my last
year of my apprenticeship and went
into
the retail
timber
and hardware business.
I started off
working as a yardman, serving customers
and racking timber then worked
my way up to the
office, answering
phones,
working out quotes,
reading plans and taking quanitites
off plans, explaining to customers
how to
build things
eg decks, pergolas,
cubby houses,
dog houses
etc. All up I spent twenty two
years in the timber and hardware business.
The job
was
very demanding
and there
was a lot
of pressure involved.
A couple of Hire A Hubbies used
to come in to purchase materials.
After
having
a lot
of conversations
with them, I decided
to join Hire A Hubby. Since I
have been doing Hire
A Hubby, I
have not
looked back. Everyday you are
doing something different, you get to
meet some nice
people and you get so
much satisfaction from
helping people and doing jobs
for them. I find it very rewarding
and would
recommend it to
anyone.
Wood Machinist/Transport
Troy
Hi, my name is Troy and I have
been a Hire A Hubby franchisee
since December
2004.
I was a wood machinist by
trade for six years, and
then owned
a transport
business
for nine
years. The
hours
with the transport
business were very long
and not flexible. With a new
family we
needed more control over
our time, I did not want
to become
one of
the many
men
I speak
with who
regret not spending
more time
with their children when
they were little. Our decision
in
changing
careers was
whether to become
a franchisee
or start
our own handyman
business. After lots of
research we could not go past
the network of support
Hire A Hubby provides for us and
the
customers, plus time and
cost savings
with pooled advertising
and business ideas.
My handyman skills have
come from my trade, helping
build
my parents
and
then my own
home and generally
watching
and learning.
I enjoy being a Hire
A Hubby franchisee
as I have
control
over the work
I do, the time
I commit
and
the profit
that I make.
Fitter & Turner
John Harley
My name is John and
I have owned a
Hire A Hubby
franchise
in for
7 months.
I am a fitter and
turner by trade
and then went
on to become
a
Technical Trainer
at Management
level. I then
worked
my way to
become a Production
and Operations
Manager before
making the decision
to join
Hire A
Hubby.
I joined the
franchise to
gain freedom
from bureaucratic
nonsense
of corporate
life,
I had a strong
desire to control
my own
destiny and
to run my own
business.
I learnt my
handyman
skills from growing
up on a farm.
I have
always done
routine
general
maintenance
on my
own home
and
also built
my own home.
I enjoy being
a Hire
A Hubby because
I
can finally
control
my own
affairs. I can
work
around
family and personal
commitments
and most
of
all I
am doing
the type
of work
I really enjoy.
